The Ultimate Cancer Fighting Kitchen: Immersion Blender and Budwig “Chocolate Pudding”

The Cuisinart SmartStick Immersion Blender $30

(This post is part of the ongoing “Ultimate Cancer Fighting Kitchen” series.)

The Budwig Protocol or “Cottage Cheese/ Flaxseed Oil” is just as, if not more important than my other cancer fighting staple, the green veggie smoothie. The research of German biophysicist, Dr. Johanna Budwig is highly respected and has stood up to skeptics through over 60 years of medical progress. It’s so unfortunate that this one simple combination of food can make such a difference in fighting cancer and yet is so ignored by mainstream medicine.

The Budwig mixture is effective on its own for a more holistic approach, but it can also be combined with a chemotherapy or radiation regimen with no known interference and shows evidence of increasing effectiveness in chemotherapy treatment.

Until recently, my challenge with Budwig sat with its “unique” taste, but I am now SO HAPPY to share my latest discovery in making the Budwig protocol, could I say- DELICIOUS?

“CCFO”

If you asked my daughter, Ruby-Claire what her mommy ate for breakfast every morning, she would gladly tell you – “CCFO!”

Almost everyday for the past four and a half years I have consumed this 840 calorie cancer-fighting powerhouse. Eaten with a cancer-fighting raw-vegan diet, weight gain should not be an issue, and in fact even on my current diet of 50-60% raw with organic meat several times a week, I still maintain my weight. If you’re not a fan of cottage cheese, you may find this protocol especially challenging, but take it from someone who ate it with their nose pinched for 15 months, YOU CAN DO IT! I absolutely hate cottage cheese, but LOVE the success I had with the Budwig Protocol.

Perseverance is very important when using Budwig to rid the body of cancer. Dr. Budwig herself states the importance in her book, Flax Oil As a True Aid Against Arthritis, Heart Infarction, Cancer and Other Diseases, that one who engages her protocol must continue on it for 5 years, or otherwise increase the likelihood of their cancer returning, perhaps with a vengeance. You are in it for the long haul and must become comfortable with Budwig preparation.

When I began the protocol (on November 4th, 2008- Election Day) I gagged and then gagged some more. This is where the nose pinching began and later gave me the idea for pinching my nose to drink my green smoothies. I didn’t need to pinch my nose forever, so trust me when I say it gets better quickly and you get tougher.

I didn’t have an immersion blender when I started the Budwig Protocol, so I used my Vitamix. I found out quickly that the Vitamix is not the best tool for making “CCFO.” First of all, the blade is set a little too high to thoroughly mix the cottage cheese and oil. It is is very important for the cottage cheese and oil to be mixed thoroughly, as there is a chemical reaction that occurs when the two combine to bind the sulfuric protein in the cottage cheese with the oxygen in the Omega-3 rich flaxseed oil.

Remember that the cancer-fighting science behind the protocol is to transport oxygen IN to the cancer cells to destroy them (cancer survives off glucose and HATES an oxygenated environment.) Read the full science behind it in the post I wrote HERE.

The second reason the Vitamix will not work for “CCFO” is that it is difficult to get ALL of the mixture out of the Vitamix and can lead to frustration and a waste of the mixture, not to mention YOU giving up easily. Eating enough CCFO is an important part of the process. You need the correct dose, so leaving a portion of the mixture in the Vitamix because you can’t reach it is NOT ideal.

The last reason is EASY CLEAN-UP. I clean out my immersion blender with dish soap in less than 20 seconds.

I love my immersion blender combined with my “CCFO Cups” that are the perfect size for the blender and amount of CCFO needed for the protocol. Another helpful tip is to use a 2 cup measuring cup to measure out the cottage cheese. Then, add the oil, blend in the cup, and eat the mixture from the measuring cup. I did this many times at the beginning of my protocol until measured enough times to start eyeballing the mixture.

Now For That “DELICIOUS” Recipe…

Ok, my magic gem ingredient for my new and improved CCFO is Stevita Chocolate Flavored Liquid Stevia. Initially I thought it was too good to be true, but I found the Stevita company to be a true proponent of natural health. In researching for this post, I gave them a call to ask about the generic term of “natural chocolate flavor” in the liquid chocolate stevia. I spoke to a kind lady named Diane who informed me that it is made from cocoa beans they buy from farmers in Brazil, so it is NOT an artificial chocolate flavoring.

Chocolate Pudding “CCFO”

2/3 cup organic 1%, 1.5% or 2% cottage cheese (Nancy’s brand is the best. After posting the above picture, I learned Whole Foods brand contains carrageenan which is not helpful for anyone fighting cancer.)

6 Tbsp organic flaxseed oil (I prefer Barleans for their quality and reputation)

10 drops of Stevita Chocolate Flavored Stevia

Directions: Mix cottage cheese and flaxseed oil using an immersion blender first. Make sure to scoop all of the cottage cheese mixture out of the blender head. The cups I use are the perfect size for making this without frustration. Once mixture is completely combined (you shouldn’t see any trace of standing oil,) add 10 drops of chocolate flavored stevia and ENJOY. I may also try experimenting with REAL cocoa powder in the future, so stay tuned to an update of this post if so or try it out yourself.

If chocolate isn’t your thing, I have also had readers tell me that they add the plain mixture to smoothies or add berries and nuts. One woman even says that she makes the CCFO mixture and adds salsa and loves it.

Get creative and remember that the Budwig mixture can be eaten as a cancer PREVENTATIVE food also!

  1. Thank you, can I use any flax seed oil?? Thanks,
I was just diagnosed with Lympoma, Kancer, ps I hate the words! Thank you for your blog!

  2. A suggestion to add to the Budwig recipe:

Dr. Budwig mentions this, I think, but it doesn’t always get covered when others relate the instructions. The flax oil and cottage cheese are to be whipped into an emulsion with a high speed blender. Then you can add other flavors, etc. But don’t use the blender for adding the other flavors. Simply mix them in with a spoon.

The high-speed whipping action of the blender is what creates the special emulsion. You don’t want to risk breaking it down by adding other things with that same high speed blender. Simply ‘fold’ them in as some recipes say, to keep from breaking down the flax/cheese emulsion.

Best of luck and long life to everyone.

  3. im on the candida dig and have been using a raw coconut yogurt with fresh ground flaxseed. Can I get the Same benefit? Can’t eat dairy. Thanks.

  4. I AM JUST STARTING TO USE THE BUDWIG MIX OF QUARK AND FLAX SEED OIL, I HAVE A BRAUN STIX BLENDER, FOR SOME REASON ALL OF THE OIL IS NOT COMPLETELY ABSORBED. MY QUESTION IS SHOULD I BUY A NEWER TYPE OF BLENDER. THANK YOU IN ADVANCE FOR YOUR ANSWER.

  5. We just started the Budwig diet, because my 18-year-old daughter has been diagnosed with pulmonary hypertension (low oxygenation). We are also not the least fond of the taste on its own, but found that mixed with the juice from 1-2 oranges (depending on size/juice amount) and some drops of pure vanilla extract, it becomes a very nice and quite tasty drink. Oftentimes we also pour this into the ice-cream-maker and get a delicious ice-“cream” to enjoy daily in our hot subtropical climate. We make our own yogurt and drain it for 24 hours to concentrate the protein content, and make our own vanilla extract (google for suggestions).

  6. Hi Courtney,

I am new to your site & find it very informative & encouraging 🙂
I was diagnosed with stage 3 folicular B-cell lymphoma in May & decided to go the holistic route 🙂
I started the ccfo today & it was very hard to get down…I gagged many times, it took me 45 mins to finish. To clarify is it ok for me to add the chocolate Stevie or some fruit while I am still battling the cancer or will it mess up the formula? i

Thank you so much for your blog! Praise God you are & will remain cancer free! 🙂
    Dawn

    • Hey Dawn! Blessings to you on this new journey. It is so rewarding but can be challenging at time, too. The CCFO was a huge challenge for me. As I’ve written many times, I held my nose for 18 months while I ate it daily. As long as you blend the CC and FO first, wait a minute or two and then add the other stuff, you will be fine doing that even while using it therapeutically for cancer.

  7. Can you drink a liter of warm lemon water first thing in the morning before you have the FO/CC mixture for breakfast?
    Thank you for your time.

  8. Hi Cortney,
I was originally eating the CCFO with ground flaxseeds and chopped raw almonds. But, the oil had a horrible fishy flavor to me and then I discovered that the ground flaxseeds were giving the concoction a stretchy texture that I couldn’t stomach at all. Literally couldn’t keep it down. I gave up on it for many months, but recently decided to try it, again. I omitted the seeds first and foremost. That has made a huge improvement for me, although I worried that I was losing the cancer-fighting benefits, so very relieved to see you don’t use them, either.

Here’s the recipe I’m currently using: the basic CCFO then add raw chopped almonds, raw cacao nibs, raw cacao powder and some raw honey and sometimes a dash of cayenne pepper. I’m on the fence about the honey, because I keep reading on many websites that sugar feeds cancer. But I found a recipe (http://www.budwig-diet.co.uk/classic-quark-linseed-oil-muesli-recipe/) that indicates Johanna Budwig included honey in her original muesli recipe, so maybe it’s okay. Sometimes I leave it out. At any rate, I call it my “almond chocolate chip” recipe or spicy almond choc chip when I use the cayenne which sounds and tastes more tolerable for me these days! Just calling it something different seems to help! lol

  9. Hi Corteny.
I have been following the Budwig Protocol for 6 Months also. I I have been getting Blood Test . Re Caner Markers and the markers have gone from 86 to 26 I have just read about the HCG Tests and will try these tests that you have did . I also wondered if you have had your mercury fillings etc . removed ?

  10. Thank you for your site – it’s great. One quick question…. I live in Kyiv, Ukraine and have never found flaxseed oil … but we do have flax seeds in abundance, that I grind and use in many things. Can I use ground flax seeds in the CCFO recipe? Would it be the same? Blessings!

    • I heard that you may also use Hemp Oil.

Yes please use the ground flaxseed. The idea is to get omega-3 into your body.
Omega-3 is available from many plants. In fresh plants the omega-3 has not been processed by humans. That is NOT to be taken to mean I am against Flaxseed oil. I use it myself.

  11. I live in a remote rural area and have not be enable to find organic cottage cheese. The closest I have found is ninety miles away. Can you use regular cottage cheese or does it have to be organic?

  12. Was reading the discussion on carrageenan being in CC. From what I read Organic Valley no longer has this in their CC. While I was comparing with Nancy’s. OV has way more sodium whereas it seems that I taste more sodium in Nancy’s. I prefer Nancy’s it seems to mix quicker with the flax seed oil. And has one lady posted Whole Foods does run out of it quickly.
    Just sharing.

  13. hi – you have two different examples of flaxseed oil shown. one picture shows a red label, one picture shows a blue label. which is the one you recommend for budwig ccfo?

  14. Please – Where do you purchase your Essac Tea? So many options and I have been warned it is not all created equally :/ Thanks

    • There are options online…google search. I would buy mine from Vitacost.com but they no longer carry it. I bought Floressence brand liquid bottle. There are also options to make it yourself and the brand with Nurse Caisse on the front is also reputable.

      • I don’t know if you received a response about the Essiac Tea. I know a good one and a source from a friend of mine who reversed (10 years now) her colon cancer at 65 years old. It is the Herbal Healer dot com and you join free then can buy bulk and make your own; or buy it made whichever you prefer. She still buys bulk and drinks a glass daily.

The site is not very friendly but the woman who owns it a gem.

  15. I am trying to find out if there is a quicker way to make the “pudding”. I have the immersion blender and have made it this way, but find it slow for the way I like to eat it. I like to make the CC & FO mixture, then add a little coconut water to dilute and sweeten it, add freshly ground flaxseeds, chopped strawberries, blueberries, and sprinkle with nuts. It takes me forever, it seems. I read online somewhere that someone would blend in a small blender (such as a NutriBullet) the CC & FO with a little milk, then add the fruit and blend again, then top with nuts. Do you know if this would be ok? I know there is science behind the mixing of the CC & FO first, but wouldn’t it still work mixed in a blender with some milk or maybe even kefir to make it thin enough to blend? Thanks for your help.

  16. I don’t know of any other brand that is safe except Nancy’s. ALL cottage cheese brands that I have checked have preservatives. I don’t know what to do when Whole Foods runs out and they do run out a lot. I just always try to stock up.

  17. I purchased the organic Whole Foods brand cottage cheese a few weeks ago when they were out of Nancy’s, but when i got home I noticed it had carrageenan. According to Bill Henderson’s book
(4th edition) it’s just another name for msg. Does the one you buy contain this ingredient? Nancy’s is the only brand that I have found that doesn’t have any preservatives. Do you know of any others that are preservative free? I love this website and it is so helpful! Thanks so much.

    • Oh yuck! I’m just reading this and some quick research later, you’re totally right! Carageenan is bad news. 🙁 I’ll need to update this post when i have time. I was even fooled thinking that buying organic would cover my bases. It can be discouraging when we’re constantly finding out something else is bad for us that we thought we were doing well. Luckily Nancy’s brand is getting it right. I just checked my Trader Joe’s brand in my fridge and it also has carageenan. 🙁

  18. Thanks for your answer!! I am implementing the Budwig protocol on a low-carb basis too, because it makes sense to me. But it is a reassurance to see that it worked for you!
Congratulations on your maternity (if I’m reading your blog correctly), and continue to take such a great care of you and your family. Best.

  19. Hi Courtney,
First let me thank you for a great, great blog! You are really an inspiration! and congratulations on beating cancer!
I’m on chemo at the moment for metastatic colon cancer, but has been slowly immersing myself on the Budwig protocol. I have no problems with the taste of the CCFO, but I do add fruit to it (berries + pineapple). I also like vegetables a lot, so i’m eating them directly without the need for smoothies.
I have a question for you: reading your entries, it seems that during the time that you were more strict you ate only one apple a day as your fruit intake (as part of your smoothies). Is this correct?
I’m asking because that would have severely restricted the amount of sugar in your diet, compare to other people doing Budwig with the fruit in the CCFO + the fruit juices. I think that having a extremely low sugar intake could have further enhanced the Budwig protocol for you….
    Thanks!

    • Thanks Irene! And kudos to you for being proactive about your nutrition during treatment. (: YES- I did limit my sugar intake pretty drastically, but I do know people who add berries since they have such a low glycemic index.

  20. I’ve been thinking about how to make a chocolate version for a long time . I’ve used Kal stevia for years. I think cooking cocoa in water then cooling will get rid the raw taste when using cocoa. I had a shake today using 1/2 cup cottage cheese, and 3 table spoons, of flaxseed oil and one tablespoon of ground flaxseed. I added a homemade kool-aid always have on hand. (10 celestial seasoning tea Baja (any flavor, I use Wild Berry) and 10 ”babyscoops” stevia-scoopis included in pkg… Then add frozen strawberries. I add liquid minerals, msm, l-glutamine, lemon(note:lemon, mixed in with flaxseed oil helps mobilize gallstones) fyi! 🙂 Protein powder by Mercola is another usual addition. Strawberry for this shake and vanilla powder for my green tea and peach shake. Delicious!!

  21. Can the CCFO diet be used when on Chemotherapy (recent resection colon cancer surgery ) . It’s all so confusing, thank you so much for any information you can give. .

    • Hi Betty!

I believe so. I found an article from Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (super conventional so not a holistic viewpoint given) very interesting. You can read it HERE. But what I found interesting was that if you really read into it, it contradicts itself. They argue that the Budwig DIET may be low in protein and encourage muscle wasting, but read at the end where they encourage the Budwig MIXTURE as long as your appetite can stomach it:
“Adding variety to your diet and being able to eat what makes your body feel better, especially during chemotherapy, is important for health and wellness. You can however, add the flaxseed oil and cottage cheese mixture as a healthy part of your overall diet. It would make a great breakfast with some fruit added to it.”

  22. Thank you, Courtney!!!! I’m getting some today! It has been a constant struggle choking down the CCFO concotion, lol. I hope this helps me 🙂

  23. Courtney, I used cocoa when I made the Budwig for my daughter. We were trying everything so she would keep eating it because she would get sick of one flavor and not want it anymore. I like to use the Budwig as a preventative measure and it makes us feel better, too. To me it is like a dessert.

  24. I was diagnosed with breast cancer a year ago and keep coming across CCFO in my research, but have kept it in my back pocket as an option because I have been vegan for 2 years and I was struggling with the idea of cottage cheese. I decided a few days ago to go ahead and do it and decided to start today. I came to your site this morning for the recipe and was so happy to see the chocolate pudding suggestion! I use Stevita already and just purchased an Organic Cocoa and Maca Powder and used those and it was not bad! Thank you so much for the suggestion!

    • Jessica, thanks for taking the time to tell me this. (: You really made my day! Let me know your progress as you go. Are there any other natural protocols that you are using? Essiac tea works well along with Budwig as well.
