Vitamix TurboBlend VS: $289 – $449

The Vitamix TurboBlend (or 5200) was actually one of the only “cancer fighting” appliances I received BEFORE I was diagnosed with cancer. Costing around $450, I almost forced my husband, Kevin to return it when he gave it to me for my 26th birthday, two months before my cancer diagnosis. I couldn’t believe the price tag! For a BLENDER!!!?? I figured out that the Vitamix cannot be classified as “just a blender,” and it is well worth it’s price tag. It’s an angelic appliance with NASA-quality engineering from the heavens!

The Beginnings of My Cancer Fighting Kitchen…

Prior to my cancer diagnosis in 2008, my main source of cooking was done in my trusty microwave. Within days of making the mental shift to alternative cancer therapies and healthy eating, my kitchen was turned upside down. We even had to buy a “kitchen cart” for our tiny apartment’s living room to hold additional pieces of equipment.

No matter what sacrifices were needed (we also had a rebounder trampoline in the middle of the living room,) my husband and I were determined to have a kitchen and a home that would HELP me become cancer-free.

Following my commitment to pursue alternative therapies, my Vitamix was truly my saving grace. I almost starved to death at the beginning of my holistic cancer protocol because of my resistance to eat salads. It was one fateful night a few days after I began my anti-cancer, raw vegan diet that I placed my salad in my Vitamix, added water, and blended. This led to the birth of Green Drink Diaries, (the original name of this blog) and multi-daily green smoothies over the next 4 years. The Vitamix makes it MUCH easier to consume vegetables because it blends them into a smooth, non-gritty Planet Smoothie/ Tropical Smoothie-esque consistency (both of these smoothie restaurants use Vitamixes to blend their drinks!)

(A side-note to the ladies: I know from personal experience how “revving” the Vitamix engine to guide the fruits and vegetables down into the blade is a big selling point for men, so when convincing the man in your life to purchase a $300-450 “blender” you may want to bring this up! It’s a Formula One race car of blending machines…)

OK, back to the story…

Post-cancer I have used my Vitamix to make mashed sweet potatoes, all of my daughter’s homemade baby food, nut butters, juices before I bought a juicer, and my husband uses it every day to make his fruit/protein smoothies as well.

Overall, this is my NUMBER ONE purchase for making a switch to a more healthful and nourishing, anti-cancer diet.
