I’ve been getting such great feedback from last week’s Vanilla Cinnamon Anti-Cancer Budwig Smoothie. Thank you for the sweet comments and messages. I know I am just so glad to have another tasty way to get such an awesomely cancer-fighting breakfast option down the hatch so it can do its thing!

This week I have another delicious anti-cancer smoothie for you. I actually “premiered” it at a HealingStrong Natural Healing Education and Support Group last Sunday here north of Atlanta and it was a hit!

The next day I got this message from the sweetest woman who was there with her husband who is healing naturally (after chemo) from a Stage 4 cancer. He was having a hard time with the Budwig mixture…until he tried the Strawberry Anti-Cancer Budwig Smoothie! This is what she wrote to me:

We tried it <Budwig mixture> with strawberries and it was a success! Someone is doing a happy dance!
We did mix the Budwig mixture first with the immersion blender and then added the milk, strawberry and stevia mixture by hand. A little more work but I’d rather play it safe. Thanks for this, you’re <my hubby’s> hero today.”

So ’nuff said. With that, I definitely think you should give it a try today!

Dr. Johanna Budwig:

For those of you not familiar with Dr. Budwig’s research on the relation between fats and cancer, here is a brief excerpt from a previous post I wrote explaining the science behind WHY this mixture is cancer fighting and healing all at the same time:

Dr. Budwig discovered the reason why our healthy cells become anaerobic in the first place. According to her, it is quite simple: Basically, in order for our bodies’ cells to process oxygen as fuel, they need certain enzymes to be present in the fat content of the foods we eat. However, because so much of the Standard American Diet (SAD diet) consists of chemically-treated, processed, sugar-laden, denatured foods, the necessary enzymes our bodies require for cellular respiration have been destroyed and in some cases even replaced bymanufactured fats (i.e. trans fats) which are completely useless to the body. Over time, this sets up a whole host of problems from heart disease, to skin and lung problems, to brain and liver problems, to diabetes and immune deficiency syndromes, to cancer and more! Simply put, to remain HEALTHY, our cells NEED to be able to process oxygen, and the Budwig diet provides this!…but HOW?

[The paraphrased science continues!] Dr. Budwig discovered that when she combined sulfur-rich proteins like cottage cheese with highly unsaturated fatty acids (rich in omega-3’s) like those found in flaxseed oil, the unsaturated fatty acids bonded molecularly with the sulphuric proteins. This bond made the flaxseed oil water-soluble, enabling it to be absorbed instantly and effortlessly through the cellular membrane. In turn, the instant flood of vital nutrients and essential enzymes to the cells (remember, the enzymes were what was missing in the first place) acted as a spark that re-ignited their ability to burn oxygen, thus restoring ALL cells to a healthy aerobic state – INCLUDING cancer cells! In other words, Dr. Budwig discovered that this simple mixture, in effect, allowed cancer cells to ‘breathe’ again, returning them to their healthy, normal state, and thereby ridding the body of cancer!”

Addressing Concerns About Calories and Staying True to Dr. Budwig…

I heard some concerns from a few “Budwig gurus” regarding high speed blending of the Budwig mixture and maintaining its chemical integrity so I’ve altered a few of my steps from last week’s post to stay closer to Dr. Budwig’s original methodology.

Another concern that was expressed by some of you was the 900+ calories this smoothie packs in it. Most of that comes from the flaxseed oil which contains large amounts of essential fatty acids (Omega 3’s) and will actually HELP you burn fat. Our body does not produce these on its own. That said, eating a mostly raw, plant-based diet (with optional and minimal healthy meats) in addition to the Budwig mixture is recommended by Dr. Budwig herself and is optimal for healing from cancer and preventing it from occurring in the first place.

And if you have a daughter who loves the movie “Frozen”, you can tell her Anna loves this smoothie (with a wink of course.) She’ll be even more eager to slurp it down. (Anna scarfs chocolate in the movie) “I want to stuff some chocolate in my faaaaaaace.” Don’t hate me for getting that song in your head again!

Anna’s Frozen Chocolate Green Smoothie:

Ingredients: (blend together)

2 bananas (also delicious with frozen bananas but make sure to omit the ice in the next step)

1 1/2 – 2 cups ice

2-3 Tbsp cocoa powder

10-15 drops chocolate stevia (regular would work too if you don’t have chocolate)

1 handful of spinach (less or more depending on your taste)

vegan protein powder (or a grass-fed whey protein)

10-15 raw cashews

1 cup (or so) of almond milk or water

It should blend a chocolate-y color, depending on how much spinach you add. I love my Vitamix for the best, most Frosty like blending. Refurbished models with 5-year warranty and brand new containers (and free shipping too!) are only $299 now!
Sounds delicious, huh!? Other names this one could be called:

The “Acquired Taste Smoothie”

The “About to Go Bad in My Fridge Smoothie”

Any others??

Alright, the point of this is that you can really put anything in a Vitamix and drink it for its nutrients. The focus is on NUTRITION, not on taste. So get your pinchers out and prepare to chug, because OUR HEALTH is worth it! Oh, and who likes to waste produce anyways? Especially when your organic food costs half your paycheck.

If you haven’t read up on the psychology of drinking a REALLY green veggie smoothie, read one of my first posts I wrote: GREEN DRINK PSYCHOLOGY.

You can find cancer fighting smoothies HERE.

You can find all of my other (and tastier) smoothie recipes HERE.

The Compost Pile Smoothie:

Any quality ingredients in your fridge (no rotting produce please!)

I used:

pea sprouts

tomatoes

baby lettuce

1 very ripe pear

1 green apple

3 stalks celery

1 small green pepper (last one from my garden)

2 cups (approx.) of filtered water

(I added some vegan protein powder since I’ll be drinking this as a meal replacement at lunch time.)

Directions: Add all ingredients and water to preferred consistency and BLEND. I like to put in two 32 oz mason jars when I’m finished and chill in the fridge until the froth has settled down and the temperature is cool but not cold. Pinch nose if needed. (:

As I’ve gotten more into fruitier green smoothies and are drinking my REALLY GREEN SMOOTHIES on much more intentional occasions, I’ve been enjoying the flavors of different fruits and supplemental foods a lot. This one is the result of some of that experimenting. (:

Cha Cha Cha Chia Peach-Banana-Chard Smoothie

1 banana

1/2 peach, no pit

1/4 avocado

2 large leaves chard (Or any green! Spinach is great for newbie smoothie drinkers.)

1 raw organic, pastured egg (You can skip this step if raw eggs gross you out or you don’t have a good egg source.)

2 Tbsp Chia seeds

1/2 scoop Vanilla Sunwarrior brand protein

3/4 – 1 cup of almond or rice milk

5 ice cubes

Directions: Blend first eight ingredients and then add the ice. I love my Vitamix for PERFECT texture!

Shoutout! The Chia seeds I used were provided for me by a sweet woman named Allison Yanagi. She owns her own health business and provides some of the best Chia around. Check her out HERE.

Dolly Parton makes me so happy. Really it’s her music and quirky personality that I love most, but I also love that she’s petite (almost 5’2″) like me and rose from very humble beginnings to global stardom.

Listening to Dolly this afternoon as my daughter relentlessly begged me for an orange- inspired this smoothie. No, I know what some of you are thinking. It’s next ingredient isn’t melons. (:

This smoothie is sunny and sweet. And since Dolly’s live album from 2002, Live and Well opens with the classic bluegrass tune, “Orange Blossom Special,” this smoothie got its name.

The Orange Blossom Special

2 small oranges (or 1 large)- peel and remove seeds

1 carrot

5 strawberries (I used frozen)

1/4- 1/2 cup water

stevia (I add 3-5 drops of Stevita liquid stevia)

Directions: Put oranges in blender first so the juice will be used to blend other ingredients. Put other ingredients in next. Add 1/4-1/2 cup water as needed. You could also add some spinach if you’re feeling on making it green. Blend well with Vitamix or other blender. Add stevia to taste. I buy the liquid stevia since I have found it doesn’t leave a funky aftertaste common with the powdered variety. Drink while listening to Dolly. (:

Yes. That is me posing for this picture, oblivious to my daughter stuffing a giant strawberry into her mouth.

The Doobie Smoothie was birthed out of some experimentation in the kitchen, and since my daughter, Ruby-Claire absolutely loves it so much, I named it after her.

Don’t let your mind wander too much…her nickname “Doobie” resulted out of pure rhyming thematic of course! “Ruby” rhymes with what else but…”doobie.”

And, oh yes…I am completely aware of the other meaning of “doobie.” Makes me think of two things…and the latter sings “China Grove.”

The Doobie Smoothie

OK, so no scaredy cats over the cauliflower! R-C loves it which probably means it is taste-bud safe for adults too. It actually adds a nice creamy consistency!

In honor of my beautiful baby girl, Ruby-Claire, here is “The Doobie Smoothie!”

You will Need:

1 banana

6 strawberries

4 florets cauliflower

1 large collard leaf or 3/4 cup chopped

1/2 cup almond milk

stevia or honey to taste

Add all ingredients except stevia and honey into a Vitamix (for best results) or blender. Add stevia or honey to taste if needed.

A few weeks ago my husband bought “Best of He-Man: Volumes 1 and 2” from Target. We had gone in to buy sponges and paper towels. That’s how Target works though, right? I even threw yoga socks into the cart and tried to bribe him. “I will put my yoga socks back if you put the He-Man DVD’s back.” My attempt at reverse-psychology was not successful.

He-Man is now my daughter’s favorite thing to do with her dad. They are now the dynamic duo that has set a new 21st century record for He-Man watching.

After I finally got over my initial parenting worries of He-Man: 1. Not being educational, 2. Having a false representation of what men and women are supposed to look and dress like (cone bras anyone?) and 3. Being a waste of time for my husband, I Let He-Man inspire me. He’s “the most powerful man in the universe”, right? If He-Man knew the cancer-fighting, nutritional density, powerhouse of antioxidants that IS the green smoothie, Skelator would never have stood a chance!

With all that said, reluctant veggie-eaters won’t even know what hit them when they try today’s smoothie! I tried it as an experiment with my own 2-year-old who is in her matter-of-factly “No Mommy, I can’t like it” phase when it comes to any leafy green things.

As parents, we must believe that our kids are capable of eating well! We should always model for them by eating well ourselves. It’s great for all “greenaphobes”- kid and adult alike since it masks the green tinge for a slightly, more earthy-purplish color.

Share it with your friends who perhaps have been reluctant to your green smoothie liking.

And if all else fails, show them the picture of He-Man, and tell them that he drinks it to “Have the Power.”

What You’ll Need for the He-Man Smoothie:

1 medium banana (throw the peel to trip He-Man’s evil nemesis, Skelator)
3/4 cup grapes (He-Man’s semi-shirt is purple, so red grapes are best)
1 Tbsp organic grape jelly
6-10 frozen blueberries (mainly for color but delicious too)
10-15 spinach leaves (for He-Man strength)
1 Tbsp organic peanut or almond butter
1/4 cup almond milk
(you may also add an ice cube or 2 to make it colder)

Blend in blender or Vitamix for best results. I have served it to my daughter in an opaque wide-opening sippy cup and a closed top cup with a straw. In both occasions it was gone in 10 minutes! Victory!
